This book is intended as a resource for process design and plant engineers responsible for designing and running processes that handle powders and bulk solids in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and related manufacturing industries. The main focus of the book is the instability, reactivity, and combustibility hazards of particulate solids manufactured or handled in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Toxicity hazards are also discussed, to a lesser extent, and there is coverage of UN-DOT Class 4, 5, and 6.1 materials. The book will aid process hazard analysis teams and leaders, as well as those operating small plants and toll operations, and may also be useful to insurance and regulatory personnel with assignments at industrial facilities that process, store, or transport large quantities of solid particulates. Indeed, substances which are practically inert in consolidated form may become quite hazardous when converted to powders and granules. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board is currently investigating dust explosions that occured in 2003 at WestPharma, CTA Acoustics, and Hayes-Lemmerz, and is likely to recommend that companies that handle powders or whose operations produce dust pay more attention to understanding the hazards that may exist at their facility. This new CCPS guidelines book will discuss the types of hazards that can occur in a wide range of process equipment and with a wide range of substances, and will present measures to address these hazards.
