Preface by Professor Peter Davies ix Acknowledgements xii Notes on Measurements and Abbreviations xiv xin which explains why she diligently ploughed through 'a few hundred pages of corrections'. Her friendship provided crucial support for the final sprint. The responsibility for what is left is of course my own. The first year in Oxford, 1983, ended with the loss of Luca d'Agliano at the age of 23, putting academic pursuits into perspective for all of us. Without the friends at St Antony's and particularly without Heather Gibson and Penny Graham my stay in Oxford would not have been the same. Heather Gibson, apart from helping me patiently with computer problems and spending valuable hours from her own work editing my own, had the tedious task, as a flatmate, of putting up with certain practical aspects of my life. Only through her Scottish spirit did I learn to appreciate England. Penny Graham's friendship and analytical mind, whether from Woodstock Road, from Summertown House, from Indonesia, Australia or Greece, helped me to sort out crucial 'anthropological' issues. My deepest gratitude, however, is to my parents, Basil and Evi Harlaftis, and my brother Sophocles Harlaftis who provided me with the motivation and the means to carry out this research. I will never be able to thank them enough for their constant love, support and encouragement throughout my studies. But this book is for my husband, Dimitri Chryssis, who taught me what is important in life. ## NOTE The terms 'prewar' and 'postwar' used in the text refer to the Second World War.
