The study examines gradation as a central mode of 18 th century thought. Originally a structural notion in the natural sciences, gradation underwent a change in the 17 th century to become a major descriptive trope for gradually intensifying patterns of change. As a trope that extends across disciplinary boundaries, gradation became an important aesthetic concept of the period in areas as diverse as rhetoric, aesthetics, dramatic art, and music. Die Studie untersucht erstmals umfassend eine zentrale Denkform des 18. Jahrhunderts: die Gradation. Ursprünglich eine Ordnungsidee der Naturlehre, erfährt sie seit dem 17. Jahrhundert einen weitreichenden Wandel. Die Gradation wird zu einer Beschreibungs- und Ordnungsfigur, mit deren Einsatz sich graduell-intensive Verlaufsformen erfassen und herstellen lassen. So befassen sich Rhetorik, Philosophie und Ästhetik ausgiebig mit der Ablösung statischer Sprach-, Emotions- und Erkenntnismodelle, die zunehmend zugunsten eines allumgreifenden Gradualismus abgelöst werden. In der Literatur avanciert insbesondere das Drama zu einem Schauplatz intensiver Steigerungsfiguren und nuancierter Darstellung, welche auch in der Musik seit Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts in Form des Crescendo Einzug halten. Die dabei entstehenden Crescendo-Kulturen deuten auf Transformationen und Transgressionen der gradationalen Denkform gleichermaßen hin. Mit der Gradation wird somit eine zentrale diskursübergreifende und -bündelnde Figur ins Zentrum gerückt, die nicht nur kanonische Texte aus neuer Perspektive erschließt, sondern auch heute als bestimmend für menschliche Denkstrukturen und Darstellungsweisen gelten kann
