A collection of archival documents, most of them published for the first time, showing the rise of state antisemitism from 1938 until Stalin's death. In the early stage, 1938-45, attempts to speed up the assimilation of Jews in the USSR, suppress Jewish culture, and purge Soviet cultural institutions of Jews were accompanied by repression of grass-roots antisemitism. The postwar period saw a rise in popular antisemitism as well as in official antisemitism. Presents documents on the murder of Mikhoels; the case of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee; the suppression of Jewish secular culture and religion; criminal cases brought against some prominent Jews, including the trial of Mariya Veitsman, Chaim Weitzman's sister; the Doctors' Plot; and purges of Jews from industry, science, etc. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism)
