Multipolar governance permits a number of important states to have significantly more economic and political clout than others, but among them there is hardly any hierarchy. The new energy challenge, with its intricate socio-economic, ecological and international-political considerations, is a multi-dimensional, multi-level and multi-actor issue that requires a minimum of 'central' political steering, because neither the invisible hand of the market, nor unilateral or bilateral power politics are capable to bring about sustainable solutions. Global Energy Governance in a Multipolar World investigates the relationship between the emergence of a multipolar world order and the enormous challenges of global energy governance that the world is facing in the 21st century. It reflects on fundamental questions such as how the main consuming countries can avoid conflict over scarce resources, how they will cooperate to bring about open energy markets, energy conservation and efficiency, and how they can promote renewable energy sources. Reviews: 'This important book addresses a crucial issue that has been ignored for far too long – how to establish and implement international rules that facilitate energy security on a sustainable basis for all. It combines a thorough analysis of the world’s key energy governance institutions, the interests of key countries, and the past and potential roles for concerts of major powers such as the G8 with thought-provoking recommendations that deserve serious consideration by policy-makers around the world.' Ann Florini, National University of Singapore, Singapore and The Brookings Institution, USA '…a truly path breaking book on a subject of vital importance that shows a deep understanding of the increasingly multi-polar and interdependent world in which we live. Energy issues cannot be compartmentalized from other global issues and the authors grasp the reality that the world needs a ‘political steering committee’. They are right. Can Non-state Actors Contribute To Improve The Output- And Input-oriented Legitimacy Of Global Environmental Governance? Helmut Breitmeier Responds To These Questions, Balancing The Volume With Both Theoretical And Empirical Chapters. The Theoretical And Conceptual Chapters Illustrate The Relevance And Meaning Of Legitimacy As Well As The Impact Of Non-state Actors On Environmental Governance. They Also Describe Various Methodological Issues Involved With The Coding Of 23 Environmental Regimes. The Empirical Chapters Are Based On The Findings Of The International Regimes Database (ird). They Explore Whether Problem-solving In International Regimes Is Effective And Equitable And The Influence Of A Regime's Contribution To How States Comply With International Norms. These Chapters Also Analyze Whether Non-state Actors Can Improve The Output- And Input-oriented Legitimacy Of Global Governance Systems.--book Jacket. "Plant genetic diversity is crucial to the breeding of food crops and is therefore a central precondition for food security. Diverse genetic resources provide the genetic traits required to deal with crop pests and diseases, as well as changing climate conditions. It is also essential for the millions of people worldwide who depend on traditional small-scale farming for their livelihoods. As such, plant genetic diversity is an indispensable factor in the fight against poverty." "However, the diversity of domesticated plant varieties is disappearing at an alarming rate while the interest in the commercial use of genetic resources has increased in line with biotechnologies, followed by demands for intellectual property rights. The ensuing struggle over genetic resources has given rise to several international agreements." "This book analyses the international regimes and their interaction; traces the driving forces across scales and the effects in developing countries; and identifies entry points to shape a better governance of agrobiodiversity." "This is the first comprehensive analysis of how the international agreements pertaining to crop genetic resources affect the management of these vital resources for food security and poverty eradication in developing countries."--BOOK JACKET Plant genetic diversity is crucial to the breeding of food crops and is therefore a central precondition for food security. Diverse genetic resources provide the generic traits required to deal with crop pests and diseases, as well as changing climate conditions. It is also essential for the millions of people worldwide who depend on traditional small-scale farming for their livelihoods. As such, plant genetic diversity is an indispensable factor in the fight against poverty. However, the diversity of domesticated plant varieties is disappearing at an alarming rate while the interest in the commercial use of genetic resources has increased in line with bio-technologies. The capacity of developing countries to effectively use such systems is limited with much protest against intellectual property rights from the South. This book provides an introduction to the relevance of food security. It analyses international regimes and their interaction. It highlights future prospects with a discussion of relevance for practitioners as well as researchers. This important book contributes to our understanding of how international regimes affect the management of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture in developing countries Plant genetic diversity is crucial to the breeding of food crops and is therefore a central precondition for food security. 'Environmental skepticism'describes the viewpoint that major environmental problems are either unreal or unimportant. In other words, environmental skepticism holds that environmental problems, especially global ones, are inauthentic. Peter Jacques describes, both empirically and historically, how environmental skepticism has been organized by mostly US-based conservative think tanks as an anti-environmental counter-movement. This is the first book to analyze the importance of the US conservative counter-movement in world politics and its meaning for democratic and accountable deliberation, as well as its importance as a mal-adaptive project that hinders the world's people to rise to the challenges of sustainability. Specific consideration is given to the threat of the counter-movement to marginalized people of the world and its philosophical implications through its commitment to a'deep anthropocentrism'. Environmental and energy policies have become increasingly significant in European and North American politics. This fascinating book uses a wide range of case studies that embrace climate change, product standards, chemical regulations, renewable energy policies, food safety and genetically-modified organisms to examine areas of conflict and cooperation in the transatlantic relationship. While there are many areas where the European Union and the United States are following divergent policy paths, there are also many signs that a more cooperative transatlantic relationship could emerge in the future. Transatlantic Environment and Energy Politics is highly relevant to understanding how the European Union and North America can cooperate more effectively in meeting today's many global environmental and energy policy challenges. It is essential reading for all advanced students and scholars.
