Gladiator is the tale of a man endowed from birth with extraordinary strength, speed, mind and sex-drive. The product of an amazing biological experiment, Hugo Danner, was born and grew up free from the fears that inhibit other men. Philip Wylie sought to develop more than a pulp hero. His Gladiator provides surprising insights into the difficulties suffered by the truly gifted when born in our midst. Danner is considered by many to be the inspiration for the character Superman.
