Annotation Tunnels have a high degree of risk that needs to be assessed and managed. Underground works intersect and interact with natural materials, incorporating their characteristics as structural components of their own stability. For this reason geotechnical risk analyses are implemented at all phases of tunnel construction, from design through to post-construction maintenance. Analysis of geotechnical risk involves a group of studies which lead to the identification and evaluation of the potential probability of error and the consequences of its occurrence. This volume considers construction and safety, financing and control, and exploration and maintenance. Eminent specialists discuss risk assessment and management, based both on advanced theoretical concepts and on practical experience. The book is of interest to a wide range of professionals involved in planning, construction and management of tunnels: entrepreneurs, designers, consultants and contractors Book Cover......Page 1 Half Title......Page 2 Title......Page 4 Copyright......Page 5 Table of Contents......Page 6 Preface......Page 8 An introduction to geotechnical risk in rock tunnels......Page 10 Learning with accidents and damage associated to underground works......Page 16 Geological risk in the use of TBMs in heterogeneous rock masses – The case of “Metro do Porto”......Page 50 Geotechnical risk management in tunnelling......Page 62 Use of decision aids for tunnelling......Page 72 Fault zones and TBM......Page 84 Geomechanical problems in recent Spanish tunnels......Page 128 Geotechnical risk in rock mass characterisation – a concept......Page 154 Risk control at the design of a 13 km long railway tunnel in Austria......Page 164 Koralm tunnel – benefits of a structured design and investigation process – the client’s view......Page 174 Vibration mitigation at high speed railroads......Page 182 Evaluation of the reliability in reference geological hydrogeological models......Page 190 Author Index......Page 200
