Few of us can any longer keep up with the flood of scientific literature, even in specialized subfields. Any attempt to do more and be broadly educated with respect to a large domain of science has the appearance of tilting at windmills. Yet the synthesis of ideas drawn from different subjects into new, powerful, general concepts is as valuable as ever, and the desire to remain educated persists in all scientists. This series, Advances in Chemical Physics, is devoted to helping the reader obtain general information about a wide variety of topics in chemical physics, a field that we interpret very broadly. Our intent is to have experts present comprehensive analyses of subjects of interest and to encourage the expression of individual points of view. We hope that this approach to the presentation of an overview of a subject will both stimulate new research and serve as a personalized learning text for beginners in a field. Part A. Part. I. A result of the conference Geometrical Structures of Phase Space in Multidimensional Chaos--Applications to Chemical Reaction Dynamics in Complex Systems, held in October and November 2003 at the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics at Kyoto U., in Japan, this two-volume publication contains 27 articles by academics and researchers in Japan, the US, and Europe. Topics include regularity in chaotic transitions on two-basin landscapes, a classical Coulomb three-body problem, classical mechanism of multidimensional barrier tunneling, a revised approach to Wigner's dynamical perspective, coarse-grained picture for controlling quantum chaos and onset dynamics of phase transition in Ar7, and heat transport in molecules and reaction kinetics. Eight articles are included on new directions in multidimensional chaos and evolutionary reactions, including the role of chaos for inert and reacting transport and slow relaxation in Hamiltonian systems with internal degrees of freedom. Both volumes contain the preface and an author and a subject index. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
