In this book Nanda analyzes Gandhi's aims and methods during the period 1915-1925, his emergence as the dominant figure on the Indian political stage, his confrontation with the British, and the immediate and long-term consequences of the Congress-Khilafat alliance in the non-cooperation movement. This book analyzes both why Gandhi chose to support the pleas of Indian Muslims on behalf of the Ottoman Khalifat, and how the fate of Turkey and its Sultan-Khalifa came so completely to obsess the consciousness of a whole generation of Indian Muslims.
