Medical Informatics search process was cumbersome and required the use of command language; the most common resource I used was the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) MEDLINE database. Concurrently, I also used traditional print bibliographies and other reference works related to chemistry, engineering, medicine, and industrial technologies and manufacturing methods. Then arrived the publicly accessible internet of the 1990s, and nearly three decades later, the ability to obtain the same information on an immediate basis has become the norm.It is in homage to the hardcopy past as well as the modern digital research landscape that I compiled this bibliography with particular reverence accorded the NLM and its Bibliography of the History of Medicine which was printed in multiple volumes between 1960-1993 and Jonathan Erlen's The History of the Health Care Sciences, 1700-1980, A Selective Annotated Bibliography.I initially contemplated compiling an annotated bibliography, however, it became apparent rather quickly that the volume of appropriate literature would fill multiple tomes. Still, I thought it possible to provide a single volume guide to the literature celebrating the history of medicine. Although no single volume can capture the complete essence of medicine's history, the purpose of this bibliography is to provide historians, medical professionals, and other researchers with a "one-stop" reference work that will lead them to a journal article, book, monograph, dissertation, or other document that might answer a question they have about the history of medicine. This is accomplished by citing documents relating specifically to the history of medicine, from antiquity to the early 21st century, whether an all-encompassing review, a history of a medical specialty, or even a history of a single medical device or instrument.Another aim of this work is to advance the historiography of medicine. However, revisiting the influenza pandemic of 1918 provided a perspective as we searched for a viable vaccine and instituted public health measures. This shows that medical knowledge is an accumulative process extending to the past and it is in the spirit of that legacy that this bibliography has been compiled. The book is a one-stop resource that cites literature related to the historical aspects of medicine. It also acknowledges medicine’s global reach and devotes significant effort in that respect. Although the online world seems to dominate on both a social and educational level, there is still a need for thoughtfully curated and focused reference works and this bibliography accomplishes that goal. The book has 9,000+ citations. It utilizes the WHO's International classification of Diseases for the section on diseases and disorders and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's Product Code Classification Database for the section on medical devices, equipment, and instruments. It includes detailed subject, geographuc, and people indexes for an easy reference.
