How does the process of globalization relate to the increase of migratory flows from less developed countries to western ones? This book explores the impact of globalization upon migration from an international political economy perspective, paying particular attention to the dynamics of migration from the Middle East and North Africa area, especially Egypt, to the EU member countries. The theoretical aims of the book are to understand the problem of migration, both legal and illegal, in the context of globalization, and to assess the relation between globalization, marginalization and the EU response to threats of mass immigration from less developed countries. The book explores the original Bedouin settlement of the region, the development of the major urban areas of Arabia during the Umayyad period, the socio-political and economic developments in the Hijad and Najd up to the eighteenth century into the modern era and the rise and development of the Saudi state. This book makes a major contribution to our understanding of the history of the Arabian Peninusla, not least because it provides a perspective from and a flavor of its local origins."--Bloomsbury publishing.
