معرفی کتاب «FRENCH THEATRE, ORIENTALISM, AND THE REPRESENTATION OF INDIA, 1770-1865 : india lost... and regained» نوشتهٔ DAVID. HAMMERBECK، منتشرشده توسط نشر Routledge در سال 2021. این کتاب در فرمت pdf، زبان انگلیسی ارائه شده است.

"This book examines the French theatricalization of India from 1770 to 1865 and how a range of plays not only represented India to the French viewing public but also staged issues within French culture including colonialism, imperialism, race, gender, and national politics. Through examining these texts and available performance history, and incorporating historical texts and cultural theory, David Hammerback analyses these works to illustrate a complex of cultural representations: some contested Orientalism, some participated in Western colonialist discourses, while some can be placed somewhere between these two markers of ideology in Western culture and the arts. He also assesses the works which participated in shaping the theatrical face of Western hegemony, ones directly participating in Orientalism as delineated by Edward Said and others. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre, French literature, history and cultural studies"-- Provided by publisher French Theatre, Orientalism, and the Representation of India, 1770-1865 Cover -1 Half Title 2 Series Page 3 Title Page 4 Copyright Page 5 Contents 6 Maps 8 Figures 9 Acknowledgements 11 Chapter 1: Introduction 12 The backdrop 12 Notes 26 Bibliography 28 Chapter 2: Les Veuves du Malabar: Sati, colonialism, and the Enlightenment 30 Sati in the Western imagination 30 La Veuve and Zulime: The case for intervention 49 Two satires, two Satis 61 Conclusion 70 Notes 72 Bibliography 80 Chapter 3: Ténaïs et Zéliska: Liberty and Revolution in India 83 Natural man and law 83 Prevost-Monfort, Raynal, and L'Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements des Europeens dans les deux Indes 86 Theater under the Directory 94 Revolution abroad 98 Theater of the tribunal 106 The censors and Ténaïs et Zéliska 111 Partial image of a Republican 119 Conclusion: Orientalism as a mirror 123 Notes 125 Bibliography 137 Chapter 4: France and Tipu, the forgotten ally 141 The Tiger of Mysore 141 De Jouy and India 149 1804: Melodrama, Vaudeville, and Tipu 172 Conclusion: After Tipu 178 Notes 181 Bibliography 192 Chapter 5: Les Etrangleurs de l'Inde: The India of their nightmares 195 William Sleeman and the invention of the Thug 199 Thugs and Thuggee in France 210 The Thug staged 217 Conclusion: India the threat 236 Notes 238 Bibliography 248 Chapter 6: Conclusion 252 En recherche de l'Inde perdu 252 21st-century Orientalism 263 Notes 267 Bibliography 269 Index 271 French, theatre;,colonialism;,Orientalism;,cultural, theory;,imperialism; French theatre, colonialism,Orientalism, cultural theory, imperialism
