A study of the thought of the Austrian Jewish writer, many of whose works reflect the deep ambivalence of the Jews' relationship with Western culture and Christianity. The Jewish characters in his books are often stereotypes, influenced by Werfel's education by antisemitic monks. Ch. 13 (p. 165-188), "A Special Relationship, " deals with Werfel's attitude to Judaism, and pp. 177-188 with his theory of antisemitism and Nazism. While believing in Christ, he viewed the rejection of Christ by the Jews, and antisemitism, as theologically necessary and refused to convert.
