Papers presented at the Society's 22nd Annual Meeting, held in Poitiers, 13 are in French, 3 are in English. 6x9.5", viii+260 pp. The 22(nd) annual conference of the FCHS took place at Poitiers, France, early in June of 1996. Sixteen papers from this conference have now been brought together in this important collection, with authors who come from both sides of the Atlantic. They offer insights into in demographic, diplomatic, economic, medical, military, and political history, containing the latest research and revising ideas about the French presence overseas. Among the subject areas explored are: the French Revolution in Martinique, eighteenth-century medical practice along the Mississippi River, a family plantation on St-Domingue, Anglo-French diplomatic problems over Newfoundland fishery, and French trading posts on the Great Lakes in the eighteenth century.
