An attempt is made to examine the contribution that the study of "charge transfer into continuum states" and "projectile ionisation" has made to our overall understanding of charge exchange and ionisation and the link between them. Velocity spectra for electrons ejected in the forward direction during collisions of H2+ and He + (0.8 -2.8 MeV) with gas targets are shown together with the cross sections obtained by integrating such spectra over a range of velocities. The data are compared with the calculations of Briggs and Drepper and of Burgdorfer et al.
