Describes the kinds of foods commonly consumed by colonists, including soldiers, during the time of the American Revolutionary War. Includes recipes. School Library Journal Gr 2-4-This picture book attempts to describe a pioneer family's covered-wagon journey from Missouri to the Oregon territory, the Gold Rush, the lives of the cowboys, and what they all ate while supplying three representative recipes readers can make at home. The large-type text is slight and generalized, peppered with boldface words and their pronunciations, with definitions found in a glossary at the end. The illustrations are a mixture of mediocre reproductions of paintings of the period and black-and-white and full-color photographs of racially diverse present-day children and adults cooking. It is sad to see such a rich and complex story reduced to a few lifeless sentences.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME Kids will see both sidesthe civilian and the militaryof the Revolutionary War. History comes alive as kids make Boston baked beans, a staple food of the northern colonies. Then kids can step into the shoes of a revolutionary soldier by creating their own minutemans beef stew.
