The volume includes eight contributions on the ancient music cultures of the pre-Columbian Americas (South America, Mesoamerica, and North America), in particular on nature of music, song and dance in pre-Columbian and contemporary indigeneous societies. The papers discuss the find contexts, playing possibilities, sound characteristics, socio-cultural functions, socio-religious meanings, and the iconography of archaeological musical instruments (from the Inca and the Maya, among others), taking into account the ethnohistorical sources, and the living traditions.
