It's night. Adalia is in bed trying to get to sleep. But she can't stop thinking about the strange events of the evening before. Why did her brother, Kiva, kill their best lamb? Why did they eat bread with no yeast? Kiva stands in the dark, wondering if he has done everything correctly. He thinks of the blood smeared on the doorpost and hopes that he will not die. Moses is leading the Israelites out of Egypt, but for two members of the tribe of Asher, things have gone badly wrong. Kiva and Adalia are orphans and Hebrews in the land of Egypt. But after the night of Passover, when the time comes to leave, they get separated and have to learn what it means to rely on God for everything they need. The story follows the biblical account of the Exodus, but from a child's perspective. Both characters experience God's provision and are forced to trust God in times of danger and peril. Eventually reunited, the two look forward to where God is leading them next. They have learnt that God is their banner and both trust him with their future. This story allows children to explore the biblical text of Exodus, and also the main themes which are contained in the story. The fact that it is told from a child's perspective means that readers will immediately identify with the issues the characters face and be able to consider what that means for their life.
