Description:This one of the few books that offer comprehensive differential diagnosis lists in an easy to access format and it is one of the few books in ultrasound to present material in this manner.
Purpose:The purpose is to help readers organize their thought processes when presented with certain sonographic and clinical information.
Audience:It is intended for practicing radiologists and residents in training. It is probably too advanced for ultrasound technologists.
Features:This book covers all anatomic regions of interest, with the exception of obstetrics, that may arise in an ultrasound environment. The comprehensive nature of the book is its best feature. There are few, if any, areas that are not covered in detail. Although it may be more appropriate to devote a separate book to them, the inclusion of obstetric cases would be helpful as well.
Assessment:This is a good quality book and a useful reference. I will undoubtedly use it as a tool for problem solving particularly difficult cases in my practice. At first, I was not sure if I liked the fact that all images are at the end of each chapter, but I ended up liking the ability to quickly cross reference the sonographic appearance of different abnormalities that might be considered in the same differential.

Once the appropriate technical protocols have been delineated, the best quality images obtained, and the cases queued up on PACS, the diagnostics responsiblity reaches the radiology reading room. The radiologist must do more than simply "lay words on" but reach a real conclusion. If we cannot reach a definitive diagnosis, we must offer a reasonable differential diagnosis. A list that's too long is usless; a list that's too short may be misleading. To be useful, a differential must be more than a rote recitation from some dusty book or a mnemonic from a lecture way back when. Instead, we must take into account key imaging findings and relevant clinical information. With these considerations in mind, we a Amirsys designed our Expert Differential Diagnosis series-- EXPERTddx for short. Leading experts in every subspecialty of radiology identified the top differential diagnoses in their respective fields, enfompassing specific anatomic locations, generic imaging findings, modality-specific findings, and clinically based indications. Our expects gathered multiple images, both typical and variant, for ecah EXPERTddx. Each features at least eight beautiful images that illustrate thepossible diagnoses, accompanied by captions that highlight the pertinent imaging findings
