Description:This is a beginning book describing the application of Aaron Beck's cognitive therapy of depression. Forms are included so that the novice therapist can apply the concepts immediately with clients.
Purpose:According to the authors, "this volume provides hands-on training in the essential components of cognitive-behavior therapy for depression, emphasizing the theory and practice of Aaron T. Beck." The book is definitely needed and it meets the authors' objectives.
Audience:The book is "intended for trainees and practitioners in the mental health professions," according to the authors. I believe that the target audience are students or practitioners who are unfamiliar with the cognitive tradition. The authors are credible authorities in the subject matter.
Features:This is an excellent guide to how to apply cognitive-behavioral techniques to the treatment of depression. The book combines theory with practice. A booklet of forms is included that can be copied for use with clients. The authors show explicitly how to use the various techniques. It is well written with excellent exhibits and appendices. The print is easy to read.
Assessment:This is an excellent book that explains how cognitive-behavioral techniques are applied to depression. It compares favorably with other books I have read in the field, and this one also includes the forms, which is a great advantage. Beginning therapists will be especially pleased because it is easy reading. Practitioners unfamiliar with the cognitive tradition will find this a nice introduction, though somewhat basic.

This book and the accompanying video series are stated as being an explicit specification of the essential elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, and an elucidation of the precise behaviors that are required to conceptualize and intervene in a cognitive-behavioral manner. The authors spell out a conceptual model underpinning an empirically based clinically flexible mode of working. They use this model to develop an individualized case conceptualization and provide cognitive-behavior therapy for the depressed patient.
