who would have been horrified at the thought of personal political victory ; one of the towering intellectual leaders and institution-builders of the national Labour Party; one of Britain's pioneers in workers' education ; Cole nevertheless always seems to have time to spend informally with students. And it is in these informal contacts-tea, sherry, the Master's Discussion Group -that a special quality appears. Hidden in shyness, sheltered in matter-of-factness, protected by hedgerows of cool and clipped rationality, is a spirit so wistful, so delicate, so ineffably kind, so fundamentally lacking in contentiousness, so sensitive to the aspirations and needs of others, as to make one weep in gratitude and wonder. This is the Cole which many of his professional colleagues have never seen, or been allowed to see. This is the Cole which withered by contrast the embattled pundit by the same name. This is the Cole which was never consciously revealed. But this is the image which is freshest after twenty years. With all gratitude for his brilliance and for his intellectual inspiration and guidance, I am most grateful for having known a poised and beautiful spirit.
