Theodor W. Adorno hat in seinem Radiovortrag »Engagement oder künstlerische Autonomie?« (1962) gezeigt, dass die im Titel aufgeworfene Frage keine starre Antithese ist. Literarische Texte, die sich einseitig als (politisch) engagiert verstehen, verkennen den Autonomiestatus jeder künstlerischen Äußerung. Das Spektrum reicht von Konzepten der Zeitdichtung im 19. Jahrhundert über literarische Modelle des 20.
