Library Journal

An eclectic, people-centered set of signed essays loosely tied together by the themes of immigration into and migration within the American West is presented here by Bakken (history, California State Univ., Fullerton) and Kindell (doctoral candidate, Iowa State Univ.), following hard on the heels of Bakken's Encyclopedia of Women in the American West (Sage, 2003). More than 200 entries, each ranging between one and eight pages in length, are arranged alphabetically in two volumes. Emphasis is placed on the mid-19th to 20th centuries in the region from the West Coast to the Rocky Mountain and Northern Great Plains states. Migration widely covers any kind of relocation of people and includes such topics as the forced migration of anarchists and the U.S. Marine Corps recruit depot in San Diego as well as more expected overviews, e.g., Farming Families on the Oregon Frontier and Okies. Bottom Line Not as globally comprehensive as James Ciment's Encyclopedia of American Immigration (Sharpe, 2001) nor as broadly inclusive as Howard R. Lamar's The New Encyclopedia of the American West (Yale Univ., 1998), this work seems most useful for its 20th-century perspectives. Recommended for public and academic libraries with interests in the social history of the United States.-Nathan E. Bender, Univ. of Idaho Lib., Moscow Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
