The twelve theories described are fairly new, though they are supported by empirical research. In the book's concluding chapter, the editors summarize the theories in three ways : those which enhance or refine existing health promotion theory; those which adapt theories from other disciplines, such as sociology, psychology, or communication; and those which are grounded in the experience of health promotion practitioners. Most of the theories are illustrated by at least one detailed case study, many of which relate to HIV prevention. Other case studies discussed include an anti-smoking campaign, radon testing, and teen driving.
