CTo ## Electronics in the Life Sciences When a moving coil meter is subjected to a current alternating too fast far the coil following it to move, the reading obtained is an average value. In the case of the AC in (a), the average voltage is zero, since each positive-going peak is exactly cancelled by the following negative-going trough. After passing the diode ('rectification'), the removal ofthe troughs leads to a situation in which there is a nett positive average voltage, and hence the meter can respond with a reading proportional to the amplitude of the original AC voltage.
