The text is geared toward clinicians whoevaluate the ECG in real time, with decisions made based on thoseinterpretations — and medical care rendered. Much of the knowledge andinspiration for this book has come from our interactions renderingemergency care over the past three decades, as well as our extensiveexperience teaching ECG evaluation to a range of practitioners, includingemergency and other acute care physicians, medical students, residents ofmany specialties, EMS personnel, and nurses — all aware of the importanceof electrocardiographic interpretation in the emergency care setting. Fromthese broad experiences, we have learned what works and doesn’t work, what clinicians want and don’t want, and, most importantly, what is neededto correctly and appropriately care for patients in the emergency departmentand related settings. This is how we have put this book together. Our goal is to provide an easily understood, highly visual resource that isreadable from cover to cover. The information is presented from theperspective of the clinician at the bedside: what he or she must recognize, how to discern the important findings, and what to consider doing with thisinformation. In other words, this book is a highly practical reference guideto the management of the patient. In addition, this text can also be used as a“bookshelf reference,” a very readable reference, written for the clinician atthe bedside. We stress recognition of the various ECG diagnosesconsidering the electrocardiographic differential diagnosis whenappropriate.
