Energy and environmental issues have caused a marked increase in electricity production from renewable energy sources since the beginning of the 21st Century. The concept of sustainable development and concern for future generations challenge us every day to produce new technologies for energy production, and new patterns of use for these energies. This book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the new electricity generation technologies by addressing a diverse audience. It presents the issues, sources and means of conversion into electricity using a general approach and develops scientific concepts to understand their main technical characteristics. Systems of electricity generation from renewable energy resources of small to medium powers are presented. The basic electrical concepts necessary for understanding the operating characteristics of these energy converters are introduced, and the constraints and problems of integration in the electrical networks of those means of production are discussed. He has been with the Laboratory of Electrotechnics and Power Electronics of Lille (L2EP) as a research since 1998, and is currently the head of the "Electrical Network and Energetic Systems" research team. Arnaud Davigny has been with the Electrotechnical Department of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes d'lngénieur (HEI) of Lille, France, since 2001. His current interests concern renewable energies, distributed generation, energy storage systems, power, network and the energy management strategy development. Bruno François is Professor at the department of Electrical Engineering of Ecole Centrale de Lille, France. He is currently working on advanced renewable energy based generators and energy management systems for future smart grids. Antoine Henneton is Research Manager at the engineering school. "Hautes Etudes d'lngénieur" (HEI), Lille, France. Jonathan Sprooten is with the department of Power System Security Assessment of Elia, Belgian Transmission System Operator. From 2007 to 2011, he was lecturer at the "Hautes Etudes d'lngenieur" engineering school and research at the Laboratory of Electrotechnics and Power Electronics (L2EP) of Lille, France. Book jacket
