Since the end of the Cold War there have been a number of cases where the democratization process has been turbulent, or even violent. Addressing electoral violence, its evolution and impact in the Western Balkans, this book explores the conflict logic of election and tries to understand its basic patterns. Two decades of electoral competition in the region are analysed to identify an interesting evolution of electoral violence in terms of forms, actors, motivations and dynamics. By identifying the potential drivers of electoral violence and explaining the escalation and stimulus of violence-related events, the author combines a theoretical approach with original data to emphasise the variability of the phenomenon and its evolution in the region. The book will appeal to students and scholars of post-communist Europe and democratisation processes and the Western Balkans in particular. It should also be of interest to political advisors and those involved in developing or implementing democratisation programmes. -- Provided by publisher Cover -- Endorsement -- Half Title -- Series Information -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Table of contents -- Figures -- Tables -- Acknowledgements -- Abbreviations -- 1 Introduction -- 1.1 Plan of the book -- Notes -- 2 From violence to electoral violence: Defining electoral violence -- 2.1 Violence -- 2.2 Collective violence -- Marxist approach versus non-Marxist approach -- Micro versus macro -- Contingency versus inherency -- Critical approaches -- 2.3 Political violence -- 2.4 Elections and conflict -- 2.5 Electoral violence: roots of the concept -- 2.6 Electoral violence: operational definition -- Notes -- 3 Contexts of electoral violence -- 3.1 Evidence of electoral violence in post-communist Europe -- 3.2 Electoral violence in post-communism: a typology -- 3.3 Different contexts - different styles -- Democratizing and transforming societies -- Consolidated democracies -- Modern autocracies -- Notes -- 4 Patterns of electoral violence -- 4.1 Electoral violence in the Western Balkans -- Croatia -- Serbia -- Montenegro -- Bosnia and Herzegovina -- Kosovo -- Macedonia (FYROM) -- Albania -- 4.2 Patterns of violent interactions -- 4.3 Varieties of violence -- Notes -- 5 Recipes for electoral violence in the Western Balkans -- 5.1 QCA: the method -- 5.2 Explaining electoral violence in the Western Balkans -- Outcome -- Conditions -- MDSO-MSDO analysis and the calibration of conditions -- Ethno-cultural conflict (ECC) -- Quality of democracy (QD) -- Security dilemma (SD) -- Electoral integrity [EI] -- Socio-economic conflict (SEC) -- 5.3 Models of electoral violence -- 5.3.1 Model 1 -- Discussion -- 5.3.2 Model 2 -- Discussion -- 5.3.3 Model 3 -- Discussion -- 5.3.4 Model 4 -- Discussion -- 5.3.5 Model 5 -- Discussion -- 5.4 Conclusion: models and solutions -- Notes Cover Endorsement Half Title Series Information Title Page Copyright Page Dedication Table of contents Figures Tables Acknowledgements Abbreviations 1 Introduction 1.1 Plan of the book Notes 2 From violence to electoral violence: Defining electoral violence 2.1 Violence 2.2 Collective violence Marxist approach versus non-Marxist approach Micro versus macro Contingency versus inherency Critical approaches 2.3 Political violence 2.4 Elections and conflict 2.5 Electoral violence: roots of the concept 2.6 Electoral violence: operational definition Notes 3 Contexts of electoral violence 3.1 Evidence of electoral violence in post-communist Europe 3.2 Electoral violence in post-communism: a typology 3.3 Different contexts – different styles Democratizing and transforming societies Consolidated democracies Modern autocracies Notes 4 Patterns of electoral violence 4.1 Electoral violence in the Western Balkans Croatia Serbia Montenegro Bosnia and Herzegovina Kosovo Macedonia (FYROM) Albania 4.2 Patterns of violent interactions 4.3 Varieties of violence Notes 5 Recipes for electoral violence in the Western Balkans 5.1 QCA: the method 5.2 Explaining electoral violence in the Western Balkans Outcome Conditions MDSO-MSDO analysis and the calibration of conditions Ethno-cultural conflict (ECC) Quality of democracy (QD) Security dilemma (SD) Electoral integrity [EI] Socio-economic conflict (SEC) 5.3 Models of electoral violence 5.3.1 Model 1 Discussion 5.3.2 Model 2 Discussion 5.3.3 Model 3 Discussion 5.3.4 Model 4 Discussion 5.3.5 Model 5 Discussion 5.4 Conclusion: models and solutions Notes 6 Conclusion: Electoral violence, the Western Balkans and the world Note Appendix References Index Introduction -- From Violence To Electoral Violence -- Contexts Of Electoral Violence -- Patterns Of Electoral Violence -- Recipes For Electoral Violence In The Western Balkans -- Conclusion.
