In a book covering such a wide variety of countries, organisations and subjects, there are inevitably a large number of organisations, both official and unofficial, and individuals in many parts of the world who have given generously, both of their wisdom and time, to the author and consultants. The governments, universities and many individuals and organisations in Chile, India, Kenya, Senegal, Tunisia and Turkey afforded the consultants who visited their countries much assistance, without which the chapters on the developing countries could not have been prepared. The high commissions and embassies in London, and also the embassies of Senegal and Tunisia in Paris, gave valuable initial help. The author paid several visits to France, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands, and had numerous discussions with government departments, official and unofficial organisatIOns and individuals. The visits were always encouraging, and she is also grateful for the considerable assistance provided by the ambassadors and staff of the London embassies concerned. Apart from a number of meetings at UNESCO headquarters, and OECD in Paris, visits were arranged by the Geneva Office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research in Geneva, when it was possible, to have discussions with people at the headquarters of the United Nations agencies, or with liaison officers, if the agency was not based on Geneva. In the United Kingdom amongst government departments notable help was given by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Ministry of Overseas Development; the British Council, both in the United Kingdom and in the countries abroad included in the project, were endlessly helpful; many universities, official organisations, including Commonwealth ones, unofficial organisations, and numerous individuals spent much time and thought in providing helpful information. It was not possible to visit the United States of America, but both government departments in Washington, various universities, the Ford and xii ## Educational Aid and National Development Rockefeller Foundations, and other organisations and individuals were generous with information and comments, both through correspondence and talks in London. Three successive cultural attaches gave much assistance, namely the late Dr .Edward D. Myers, Professor Robin Winks, now of Yale University, and the late Dr Wayne Wilcox, tragically killed in the Turkish air crash at Orly in March 1974. The United Nations and United Nations agencies have also been most patiently helpful, in particular UNESCO in Paris; the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, both in Geneva and New York; the United Nations Information Office in London and the United Nations Development Programme, which not only provided some of the consultants with office space when they visited developing countries, but have supplied a constant flow of valuable information. To all the people and organisations who are included in the preceding paragraphs, and they run into many hundreds, we would express our grateful thanks. A survey of this nature has to be financed, and have a base from which the work can be directed. The project would not have seen the light of day without the very generous grant made by the trustees of the Leverhulme Trust Fund. Not only did the trust fund provide a fellowship for the author, but also met the expenses of the three consultants based on the United Kingdom, and of the Indian consultant and his two assistants. For the major part of the duration of the grant the Director of the trust fund was Lord Murray of Newhaven, and we owe much to his constant and understanding encouragement. Bedford College (University of London), which administered the Leverhulme grant, provided a beautiful place from which to work and most generously gave a subvention towards the completion of the task. I am deeply grateful to the Council of the college, to the successive principals, Mrs E. M. Chilver and Dr John Black, to the Department of Sociology, not only for providing a room, but also for their kindness, and to many friends amongst the staff and students. All concerned owe much gratitude to the Netherlands Universities Foundation for International Cooperation, who appointed the consultants to Kenya and Senegal, and financed their visits to those countries; Dr H. G. Quik, Director General of the Foundation until February 1974, in particular gave us endless help and cooperation.
