The object of this thesis is to present the first com plete edition of Renaut de Louhans’ verse translation of the Consolatio Philosophiae of Boethius. The work is presented in two volumes. Volume one consists of four chapters and an appendix which forms part of chapter two. Volume two contains five chapters w hich are followed by a bibliography and a short appendix. This edition concludes with a bibliography and an appendix which presents photographic reproductions of the miniatures found in our base manuscript. Volume One . Chapter one serves as an introduction to the edition. The author, title and date of the text are discussed. We then consider the place of the Roman in the French tradition of the Consolatio. . Chapter two presents an extensive study of the 37 copies of the text which have been found to date. Following the description of the manuscripts we outline the main characteristics of each of the copies and group them into three families. The selection of our base manuscript, Paris , Bibl. nat ., fr, 578 and four control texts forms part of this chapter. . Chapter three presents a linguistic study which includes a discussion of the verse forms found in the text and a detailed exam ination of the dialect, based on a table of rimes, which confirmed Renaut de Louhans' East Burgundian origin and revealed some Franc-Comtois influence. It concludes with some remarks on morphology. . Chapter four considers the text as a translation/adaptation. We present some evidence of Renaut's borrowings from two main sources : Nicholas Trevet’s and the Pseudo-Thomas’ Latin commentaries and comment on his use of the French translation n°V. The second part of this chapter discusses Renaut's translation techniques. Volume Two Chapter one outlines the principles adopted for the establishment of the text. . Chapter two presents the edited text followed by the variants from the control manuscripts. . The names mentioned in the text are treated in chapter three and chapter four gives a glossary. . The notes are to be found in chapter five. They include remarks on a few difficult vocabulary items and details of Renaut's errors of interpretation.
