Ecotourism and nature conservation In the field of desert conservation, this book presents a new approach that preserves ecosystems, fosters local economic development and capitalizes on both natural and cultural landscapes for ecotourism. Situated in the special protected area of Shobak, a Jordanian desert region rich in historical background and biodiversity, the innovative strategic plan unites the goals of nature preservation and regional development in a groundbreaking way, by developing tools for promoting the untapped potentials of wild arid areas. It integrates the professions of landscape architecture and architecture with various other disciplines including natural resources management and ecology in order to provide complex, tailored solutions that are resilient to shifting socio-political contexts and harsh arid environments. * Sustainable development of wild arid areas * A unique project that provides fundamental insights
Ecotourism is a major source for financing ecological environmental development. The fundamental challenge of this approach is how to unite the conflicting goals of ecotourism and nature conservation. The World Bank has co-financed a model project in Jordan. Landscape architecture took a leading role in the masterplanning. This book documents the results and gives an account of the lessons to be learnt Acknowledgments Table Of Contents Foreword Introduction Area Of Study Essays Methodology Case Studies: Lessons Learned In Other Arid Climates Research In Situ Site Analysis: National Scale Site Analysis: Regional Scale Site Analysis: Local Scale Masterplan Masterplan Phase 1: Capitalize On Existing Features Masterplan Phase 2: Enhance & Develop References Appendix Biographies
