Sindsdien heeft de belangstelling voor hun werken zoals die tot uitdrukking komt in collectionering en onderzoek een geweldige vlucht genomen. De bestudering van deze schilderijen omvat allerlei aspecten, zoals toeschrijving en datering, bronnen-onderzoek, inhoudelijke interpretaties, en onderzoek naar werkplaatspraktijken en de sociale en cultuur-historische context. Deze publikatie biedt een introductie op de Oudnederlandse schilderkunst door te laten zien op welke verschillende manieren deze kunst sedert haar herontdekking verzameld, onderzocht en geïnterpreteerd is.
