Quite a number of people have contributed indispensable assistance to the progress of this work, and I hope that this publication will constitute a small repayment to them. In the early 1980s I was introduced to the ancient Spanish olive-oil trade by my former supervisor, the late Dr. Maria da Gloria Portal, thanks to her contacts with Professor Jose Maria Blaquez ( Universidad Complutense de Madrid). From 1982, my studies were supervised by Dr. Haiganuch Sarian, resulting in my Master's degree thesis on the typology of the Dressel 20 ( 1985) and in my Ph.D. dissertation on the Consumption of olive-oil in Roman Britain ( 1990). From 1982, I have in touch also with Professor Jose Remesal, nowadays at the University of Barcelona, who acted as a special supervisor on Dressel 20 affairs. His advice has been invaluable from the beginning and I have been meeting him at least once a year for the last ten years. I would like to thank them for their supervision and friendship. CHAPTER ONE CHAPTER TWO THE STUDY OF DRESSEL 20 AMPHORAE: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION The Study of Dressel 20 Dressel 20 stamps can also be dated thanks to contextual dates from other sites in Britain or in the Continent. The following are the most common available sources: I. Rome: A. Fossa aggeris or castrum praetorium material: Dressel studied a group of amphore used to fill this area and concluded that all of them should be dated before AD 50 (Dressel 1978 & CIL XV, 2); B. Monte Testaccio: stamps from Monte Testaccio can be dated thanks to their location in the Hill, classified originally by Dressel through the use of letters. Each specific spot produced dated material enabling us to equate each of them with specific dates as follows: Although amphorology is now a thriving subject the epigraphy of their inscriptions has been neglected. Funari provides an introductory discussion of epigraphy, a catalogue of stamps found in England with an economic analysis and chronological study. He also includes a large corpus of epigraphic material found in Britain - 260 instances of painted inscriptions, graffiti and stamps. Funari's thesis makes this useful class of evidence more available to non-specialist scholars.
