Anatomy books are essential for figure artists, but many are published for medical purposes and tend to give too much information – for example, the inner organs of the body are interesting to know about, but not relevant for drawing.What is important for the artist or art student is to learn the structure of the human form, based on the skeleton and the musculature. I also consider how the muscles enable movement in each part of the body, with examples of how to show this in your drawing. The ability to draw the human figure well is the sign of a good artist. So it is vital to appreciate the body's characteristics and how they influence posture and expression.
