Something is very wrong in 17th Century England. The shadowy figure of Death stalks the forests, terrifying the local people. Behind the chaos fugitive alien life forms called Terileptils lurk. Stranded on Earth, they have seized one of the local houses, murdering its inhabitants. But just what do they want? The Doctor must discover the answer - and fast. For as events unfold, he finds he too is looking death in the face, not to mention the threat of mass genocide... They are not the only visitors as Death stalks the local woods, complete with cloak, scythe and a skull-like face. In fact, 'Death' is an android brought by a group of alien Terileptils whose spaceship has crashed. Criminals and fugitives from their own race, they now plan to take over Earth. With Adric and Tegan captured, the Doctor and Nyssa try to deal with the deadly android, and a group of local villagers under the control of the Terileptils. But even if they succeed, can they prevent the Terileptils from unleashing an even more deadly from of the Black Death? This novel is based on a Doctor Who story which was originally broadcast from 15-23 February 1982. Featuring the Fifth Doctor as played by Peter Davison with his companions Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan Tegan, the young air hostess who quite unintentionally became a member of the TARDIS's crew, wants to return to her own time, but when the Doctor tries to take her back to Heathrow Airport in the twentieth century the TARDIS lands instead on the outskirts of seventeenth-century London. The Doctor and his companions receive a decidedly unfriendly welcome but it soon becomes clear that the sinister activities of other visitors from time and space have made the villagers extremely suspicious of outsiders. And as a result of the aliens' evil schemes, the Doctor finds himself on the point of playing a key role in a gruesome historical event... The Doctor has regenerated, having sacrificed his fifth persona to save Peri's life. But things are not going well... On this occasion the process of regeneration is by no means smooth, for the even-tempered, good-humoured Fifth Doctor has given way to a rather disturbed and unsettled successor. In a particularly irascible moment the new doctor comes close to committing a shocking crime. Overwhelmed with guilt of his violent behaviour, the repentant Time Lord decides to become a hermit...
