The fields of comparative and world literature tend to have aunidirectional, Eurocentric focus, with attention to concepts of"origin" and "arrival." DisOrientations challenges thisviewpoint. Kristin Dickinson employs a unique multilingual archiveof German and Turkish translated texts from the early nineteenththrough the mid-twentieth century. In this analysis, she revealsthe omnidirectional and transtemporal movements of translations, which, she argues, harbor the disorienting potential to reconfigurethe relationships of original to translation, past to present, andWest to East.
Through the work of three key figures-Johann Wolfgang vonGoethe, Friedrich Schrader, and Sabahattin Ali-Dickinson develops aconcept of translational orientation as a mode of omnidirectionalencounter. She sheds light on translations that are not bound bythe terms of economic imperialism, Orientalism, or Westernization, focusing on case studies that work against the basic premises ofcontainment and originality that undergird Orientalism's system ofdiscursive knowledge production. By linking literary traditionsacross retroactively applied periodizations, the translationsexamined in this book act as points of connection that produce newdirectionalities and open new configurations of a futureGerman-Turkish relationship.
Groundbreaking and erudite, DisOrientations examinesliterary translation as a complex mode of cultural, political, andlinguistic orientation. This book will appeal to scholars andstudents of translation theory, comparative literature,Orientalism, and the history of German-Turkish culturalrelations.
