Ein internationales Handbuch zu ihrer Struktur, ihrer Geschichte und ihre Erforschung. An International Handbook of Their History, Their Structure, and Their Investigation is to present a balanced conspectus of the current state of scientific knowledge and problems of Slavic linguistics regarding synchronic and diachronic descriptions of the structures and functions of the Slavic languages. The concept of this handbook is designed to address the current state of research in Slavic linguistics with as much balance and thoroughness as possible. As opposed to previous works of a similar nature, this handbook is not intended to be a collection of individual grammars or language descriptions. This handbook further differentiates itself from its predecessors with the extensive scope of its subject matter and its method of description. With regards to its length, the first volume of the handbook (Chapters I-XIV), which deals with synchronic linguistics, is comprised of fourteen/14 chapters and a total of 81 articles. The second volume (Chapters XV-XXVIII) concentrates on diachronic linguistics, including questions of inner and outer histories of languages as well as social linguistics, contact linguistics, standardology and linguistic typology; the titles of the articles comprising the second volume provide some insight to their contents. The second volume, which will be completed next year, will increase this handbook’s number of pages to over 2000, making it the most extensive description of the Slavic languages available.
