This volume of the proceedings of the Society for Industrial Microbiology is arecord of the symposia, speciallectures, and contributed papers presented at the 'Sixte~nth General Meeting of the Society for Industrial Microbiology. The meeting was held from August 30, through September 3, 1959, at State College, Pennsylvania in conjunction with the 1959 annual meeting of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. This is the initial issue of an annual series. It is the desire of the Society and the members of its Publications Committee that the data, discussions, and general knowledge reported in this annual series will be widely disseminated and be of help to the workers in the field of industrial microbiology. The largest part of the current volume is concerned with data obtained in a field of applied microbiological research and it was for that purpose that the Society was formed ten years ago. Many persons are responsible for the development of this book. First and foremost are the authors themselves. Their cooperation and personal efforts have made the difference between "a book" and "no book." Furthermore, the contributors to symposia and lectures of past annual meetings deserve a word of thanks for their interest and efforts in making this a flourishing society with popular and challenging programs. Certain individuals must be singled out for a word of praise because of their continued work toward a better society.
