The cross-fertilization of physico-chemical and mathematical ideas has a long historical tradition. This volume of Advances in Chemical Engineering is almost completely dedicated to a conference on “Mathematics in Chemical Kinetics and Engineering” (MaCKiE-2007), which was held in Houston in February 2007, bringing together about 40 mathematicians, chemists, and chemical engineers from 10 countries to discuss the application and development of mathematical tools in their respective fields. * Updates and informs the reader on the latest research findings using original reviews * Written by leading industry experts and scholars * Reviews and analyzes developments in the field Content: Series Editors Page ii Volume Editors Page iii Copyright Page iv Preface Pages ix-x Hugo I. de Lasa, Benito Serrano Rosales Contributors Pages xi-xii Determination of Photoadsorption Capacity of Polychrystalline TiO 2 Catalyst in Irradiated Slurry Review Article Pages 1-35 Vincenzo Augugliaro, Sedat Yurdakal, Vittorio Loddo, Giovanni Palmisano, Leonardo Palmisano Treatment of Chromium, Mercury, Lead, Uranium, and Arsenic in Water by Heterogeneous Photocatalysis Review Article Pages 37-67 Marta I. As a result the world is witnessing accelerated development and implementation of new green technologies so as to provide ecologically responsible solutions for the much needed supply of drinking water, clean air, and various forms of energy. Photocatalysis holds great promise as a truly environmental friendly process. Using irradiation, either UV or solar light, photocatalysis promotes photoexcitation of semi-conductor solid surfaces, which in turn, accelerates oxidation and reduction reactions - essential steps for pollution degradation and other photoinduced chemical transformations, such as water splitting. The present volume presents contributions of prominent researchers in the field and aims to give a comprehensive overview of photocatalytic technology The cross-fertilization of physico-chemical and mathematical ideas has a long historical tradition.
