Description:This is a timely update of the classic textbook of orthopedic sports medicine. With this third edition, the authors provide a cutting-edge reference with the bonus of modern technology of instructional videos and web-based consultation. The original was published in 1994, with the second edition in 2003.
Purpose:This two-volume book was created to serve as the go-to reference for orthopedic sports medicine. Each chapter is filled with supportive science and references that assure that the authors have accomplished their goal. I love this update with all of its new bells and whistles.
Audience:The obvious audience is orthopedic sports surgeons, orthopedic general surgeons who do some sports, and orthopedic residents in training. However, it also will be a sought after book for primary care sports physicians and physical therapists who serve the athletic population and need to keep their knowledge base up to date and to communicate with their orthopedic colleagues. Drs. DeLee and Drez have been the leaders in educational textbooks for orthopedic sports medicine since the first edition was published in 1994. Bringing in one of the premier educators of our time, Mark Miller, as an editor serves to further secure the book's pre-eminent position. The editors have invited some of the most knowledgeable surgeons and specialists in the field to contribute.
Features:This thorough book provides significant depth and support for each chapter from basic science, to primary care issues, to specific surgical techniques. It is a classic reference that presents in-depth knowledge but allows readers to dig deeper using the excellent supporting references.
Assessment:Each edition of this book has taken a cherished and privileged place in my library. I am confident that this edition will have as many well-worn pages as the earlier ones, as I go back and re-read the chapters to address issues unique to my patients. This new edition should be a part of every academic library -- I will insist that it is part of our university orthopedic library -- and it most certainly will occupy a privileged spot in my personal library.
