Reviewer:Shawnna L Patterson, MD/PhD(University of Maryland School of Medicine)
Description:This book provides a description of the techniques of the neurological examination that integrates details of neuroanatomy and clinical diagnosis in a very readable manner. The previous edition was published in 1992.
Purpose:The purpose is to revise and shorten the old edition, discuss the neurological examination and include updated references to advances in basic neuroscience as well as to integrate advances in neuroimaging technology. There have been many advances since the last revision, and although the clinical neurological exam has not changed, the integration of these changes is needed and reflected in this new edition.
Audience:The book is written for students, residents, and practitioners of neurology. The author writes with authority on the subject.
Features:The book covers the complete neurological examination. While doing this, details of neuroanatomy are described and relevance to clinical diagnosis is discussed. The book is very readable with clinical syndromes scattered throughout as if to remind the seasoned neurologist that there is always more to learn. The figures and tables are well placed and relevant.
Assessment:The new revision is more concise, as immediately apparent by the shorter length, and replaces discussions of obsolete techniques with discussions of clinical relevance to basic neuroanatomy.
