Adolf Hitler--the German Chancellor--and Peter Kürten--the mass murderer from Düsseldorf--are the opposing but also complementary protagonists in Dieter Forte's drama "The Labyrinth of Dreams or How to Separate the Head from the Body". Forte brings these two at first sight so different characters together on the stage, and the secret parallels between the violent politician and the politically distant violent criminal are revealed. What lifts Hitler's deeds out of the sphere of the mere individual criminality of a Kürten is their aestheticization, their staging as politics. In both cases, however, the susceptibility of the masses to the act of violence and the admiration for the violent perpetrator on a large scale are evident.
