Culloden marked the end of the last and greatest of the Jacobite adventures - the '45 Rebellion - in which the Highland clans challenged the power of the Hanoverian King of England. It was at Culloden that Charles Edward Stuart's army was finally defeated. His tired Highlanders had little chance against the steady infantry and heavy artillery fire of the English. Peter Harrington examines all aspects of the battle, including its background, the earlier Highlander victories, the men and commanders of both sides, and the massacre that took place in its aftermath. On 16 July 1745, Prince Charles Edward Stuart and a handful of supporters, known as the 'Seven Men of Moidart', with a small quantity of arms and ammunition, set sail from Brest aboard two small French frigates, Du Teillay and Elizabeth, bound for the small Hebridean island of Eriskay. The battle of Culloden, the most famous battle of the Jacobite Rebellions, heralded the destruction of the Highland Clan system. As well as covering the opposing armies and the battle in detail, the book also contains useful tourist information about the site of the battle. An account of the Battle of Culloden - the climax to the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, which ended all hope of a Jacobite victory and earned the Duke of Cumberland the nickname "Butcher of Culloden". Detailed maps of the critical actions of the campaign are included. Книга Osprey Campaign No12. Culloden 1746 Osprey Campaign No12.
