Overview: Charlotte Bourne, aged twenty-four, is working as a picture restorer for Dufferyn’s, a prestigious London auction house. Her family has been ruined in a financial disaster and she has lost her home in the country. Henry Bevis also works at Dufferyn’s. Following his grandfather’s death, he is in danger of losing Thorncombe Hall, his home in Wiltshire, because heavy Death Duties have to be paid and the farms are losing a lot of money.
