Lacking the army battles and magical duels that have made the previous books in Jordan's Wheel of Time series so thrilling, this tenth tome in the fantasy epic finds characters making tough compromises as "The Last Battle" between good and evil approaches. Will Rand, Perrin and Mat have to ally with their Seanchan enemies? Will Egwene reunify the White Tower and Elayne win the throne of Andor without bloodshed? Though Jordan's fans (i.e. anyone who knows what the hell those last two sentences mean may moan that this latest installment lacks action, "The Last Battle" wouldn't be much of an Armageddon if the stage weren't properly set. Granted, the preparations have been going on for some 9, 000 pages over ten books, but when things do heat up in this series, it's always worth the wait.
