The CRC Handbook of Marine Mammal Medicine, Second Edition is still a must for anyone interested in marine mammals. This book was a real godsend. I live in a relatively isolated area in Northern Alaska so when my walrus developed an abscessed tooth I was in real trouble. Luckily my neighbor Oooglit had a copy of this book that he was willing to lend me. So with this book, some vodka, a pair of pliers and a mallet I was able to complete my home dentistry project on Noodles (my walrus). Also, as a thank you to my neighbor Ooglit, I was able to do some corrective orthopedic surgery on Ooglit's brother Nús'k Gugán using the same book and tools with slightly more vodka. Suitable for those interested in marine mammals, this handbook guides readers through the natural history of cetaceans, pinnipeds, manatees, sea otters, and polar bears. It provides information on medicine, surgery, pathology, physiology, husbandry, feeding, and housing, with special emphasis on strandings and rehabilitation. It was January 1958, when Rachel Carson, a marine biologist who had been working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, received a letter from Olga Owens Huckins of Duxbury, Massachusetts.
