in Three Interviews, The Marxist Historian And Scholar Perry Anderson Takes Sartre On A Wide-ranging Tour Of His Philosophy And Politics
library Journal
this Brief Collection Of Interviews Presents Sartre's Philosophical And Political Views On Such Topics As Individual Freedom, Marxism, And Women's Rights. The Three Interviews-which Appeared In The Journals New Left Review And L'arc In 1965, 1967, And 1975-give The Reader A Glimpse Into Sartre's Philosophy As Developed In His Critique Of Dialectical Reason. In The First Interview, Sartre Explains How His Philosophy Evolved From An Emphasis On Individuals And Freedom To His Blending Of Existentialism And Marxism, Which Sees Individuals Through Class Relationships. This Sets The Tone For The Following Interviews, In Which Sartre Uses His Marxist Theories To Explain His Views On Women's Rights And The Ethical Condemnation Of Imperialist Societies. While The Interviews Offer An Interesting Insight Into How Sartre's Theories Developed, The Collection As A Whole Does Little Else. There Is No Introduction To Explain A Common Theme, And The Chapters Are Simply Given The Title Of The Original Article With A Citation At The End. Because Of These Deficiencies, This Collection Is Not Recommended.-scott Duimstra, Capital Area Dist. Lib., Lansing, Mi Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
