This book is a unique and superb gateway to current psychoanalytic thinking. No mere anthology, these are the key writings that underlie current discussions of psychoanalytic theory and technique. The chapters cover contemporary ideas of intersubjectivity, object relations theory, self psychology, relational psychoanalysis, hermeneutics, clinical technique, changing concepts of unconscious, empirical research, infant observation, gender and sexuality, and more. Reviewer:Brett C. Plyler, M.D.(Northwestern Memorial Hospital)
Description:This is a collection of major articles by leading psychoanalysts in the field in the U.S. and a discussion of each by their author.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide authoritative presentations, in the analysts' own words, of the leading schools/trends/movements in psychoanalysis in America.
Audience:The book is intended for anyone interested in the field of psychoanalysis or human psychology.
Features:Each of the 30 articles is written by a leading American analyst and presents what each believes to be most representative of his or her work. Commentaries by the authors discuss the reasons behind their choices and provide further explanations of their views. These authors and their works are representative of the major trends or schools of thought.
Assessment:As a compendium of articles in which 30 of the leading analysts talk about their work and what it contributes to the field of psychoanalysis, this is an excellent and much needed book. With the advent of self psychology and ego psychology's loss of dominance, there has been an explosion of new theories and ideas in the mainstream. This book does a wonderful job of bringing together all of these, from intersubjectivity to infant psychology, in one easily accessible format. I would highly recommend this to anyone in the field of psychoanalysis or psychology.
