On one hand, there are facts about conscious experience--the way clarinets sound, the way lemonade tastes--that we know subjectively, from the inside. On the other hand, such facts are not readily accommodated in the objective world described by science. How, after all, could the reediness of clarinets or the tartness of lemonade be predicted in advance? Central to Daniel C. Dennett's attempt to resolve this dilemma is the "heterophenomenological" method, which treats reports of introspection nontraditionally--not as evidence to be used in explaining consciousness, but as data to be explained. Using this method, Dennett argues against the myth of the Cartesian theater--the idea that consciousness can be precisely located in space or in time. To replace the Cartesian theater, he introduces his own multiple drafts model of consciousness, in which the mind is a bubbling congeries of unsupervised parallel processing. Finally, Dennett tackles the conventional philosophical questions about consciousness, taking issue not only with the traditional answers but also with the traditional methodology by which they were reached.Скачать Зеркало 0 1 2 3 4 5 Cover......Page 1 Title Page......Page 4 ISBN \t0316180661......Page 5 Contents......Page 8 Preface......Page 12 1 Prelude: How Are Hallucinations Possible?......Page 18 2 Explaining Consciousness......Page 36 3 A Visit to the Phenomenological Garden......Page 58 4 A Method for Phenomenology......Page 81 5 Multiple Drafts Versus the Cartesian Theater......Page 116 6 Time and Experience......Page 154 7 The Evolution of Consciousness......Page 186 8 How Words Do Things with Us......Page 242 9 The Architecture of the Human Mind......Page 268 10 Show and Tell......Page 300 11 Dismantling the Witness Protection Program......Page 336 12 Qualia Disqualified......Page 384 13 The Reality of Selves......Page 427 14 Consciousness Imagined......Page 446 Appendix A (for Philosophers)......Page 472 Appendix B (for Scientists)......Page 479 Bibliography......Page 484 Index......Page 508 Back Page......Page 527 Daniel Dennett's'brilliant'exploration of human consciousness — named one of the ten best books of the year by the New York Times — is a masterpiece beloved by both scientific experts and general readers (New York Times Book Review). Consciousness Explained is a full-scale exploration of human consciousness. In this landmark book, Daniel Dennett refutes the traditional, commonsense theory of consciousness and presents a new model, based on a wealth of information from the fields of neuroscience, psychology, and artificial intelligence. Our current theories about conscious life — of people, animal, even robots — are transformed by the new perspectives found in this book.'Dennett is a witty and gifted scientific raconteur, and the book is full of fascinating information about humans, animals, and machines. The result is highly digestible and a useful tour of the field.'—Wall Street Journal Daniel C. Dennett is one of a handful of leading unbelievers. He is a scientist who questions the existence of God. The New York Times considered Consciousness Explained "one of the ten best books of the year." Dennett writes clearly and interestingly. Even very religious people will benefit by reading his books, for he raises questions that people need to answer. People should not sit back passively and watch life pass before them like a entertaining TV program. Every religious book and every philosophy book that is worth reading teaches that people have an obligation to be active, to develop themselves and improve society. Dennett's books inform people how the human body works, in this case, consciousness and unconsciousness. He addresses the question, how is it possible for material, the human body, to think? This book revises the traditional view of consciousness by claiming that Cartesianism and Descartes' dualism of mind and body should be replaced with theories from the realms of neuroscience, psychology and artificial intelligence. What people think of as the stream of consciousness is not a single, unified sequence, the author argues, but "multiple drafts" of reality composed by a computer-like "virtual machine". Dennett considers how consciousness could have evolved in human beings and confronts the classic mysteries of consciousness: the nature of introspection, the self or ego and its relation to thoughts and sensations, and the level of consciousness of non-human creatures.
