An excerpt from the This Guidebook is the product of almost a life-long study and observation of the phenomenon of dying, starting in late childhood when, as a boy of twelve, the author began accompanying his mother in her work of helping people to die as some kind of Pho-O (Tibetan word for "Extractor of Consciousness") or Thanatologist, and culminating in several Thanatology Intensives in the World University of America in Ojai, California, during which he helped the participants to undergo COOBE, or Conscious Out-Of-Body Experience.
